1. Keenan’s near death experience

    keenangaynor:

a lot of people have still been asking about what exactly happened to me last week, so I figured I’d do a tumblr run-down on my accident to take care of any unanswered questions.

    tuesday, december 7th

it was about 12:00ish am - late night/early morning. I was doing laundry because my chocolate lab pissed on my comforter while he was sleeping on it. I’m actually just getting it out of the dryer, heading upstairs to go to bed. on my way up the steps, however, I step on my 20-year-old-blind-in-both-eyes Cat’s tail. he goes nuts, I lose my balance, I fall face first down the steps onto the concrete floor covered in 2 inches of wood. I sort of remember falling.

after a series of seizures in puddles of my own blood, I awaken to a team of south plainfield paramedics surrounding me. don’t have a very good idea of what’s going on, except that I can’t move my right arm, think I’ve gone blind in my right eye and can feel my jaw hanging in half.

I’m rushed to Robert Wood Johnson in new brunswick, where I proceed to have a hellish night/morning of being in and out of consciousness, throwing up buckets of blood in CT Scanners, and having my shoulder punched back into it’s socket (literally).

I spent the rest of that Tuesday in a sort-of intensive care suite with several roommates (one of which was an elderly man who kept having the fluid in his lungs painfully and very audibly drained out every 15 minutes).

    wednesday, december 8th

after nearly two days of laying around with an excrutiatingly painful broken jaw, I finally got a visit from the plastic surgeon (because they couldn’t operate on my jaw without clearing things with her). lucky(?) for me, the myriad of bones broken on my face (surrounding my right eye) were all touching each other. therefore, they will all be able to heal on their own, without my face having to be sliced open.

the oral surgeon who was to operate on my jaw (who bared a striking resemblance in looks and demeaner to joe stasio’s father, which obviously made me feel that I was in good hands) was doing everything he could to get me into the OR. unfortunately, the RWJ Operation Rooms were booked for days - and I was “#1” on their priority waiting list.

after a few threatening calls from my mother and the help of Dr. Simos (my oral surgeon) I finally made it into the OR late Wednesday night. by 11pm, I was out of surgery with my jaw wired completely shut (yes, like Kanye West).

shortly thereafter, I was released (more like kicked out) of the hospital. now I’m residing on the couch, restricted to drinking Ensures and Hi-C’s through straws for the next 6 weeks. my jaw is still in a pretty wicked amount of pain (even with the liquid percocet I was subscribed) and I’ve got a ton of doc appointments / rehab / therapy sessions lined up over the next few weeks.

I was going to click the heart, but then it would’ve told keenan: “beardedaxe likes your post “near death experience,” which would obviously be the opposite of true. Prayin for ya Keenan, get better.
